Product Details

5kV-8kV Type MV-105 - 115 Mils EPR with PVC Jacket

The conductive component of the 500MCM 5-8KV Power Cable 115 Mils is a concentric compact stranded class B copper conductor.  The class B copper in this cable is annealed to make the conductor softer and more malleable.  The conductor is covered by triple single head extruded conductor shield.  The conductor shield is then insulated with a dry cured ethylene propylene insulation that bears an easy strippable bare copper insulation shield.  The bare copper insulation shield is made of 5 mils annealed copper with an overlap of 25%.  A black, surface printed polyvinyl chloride (PVC) jacket serves as the external layer of the cable.  The exterior jacket is flame-retardant and moisture and sunlight resistant.

The 500MCM 5-8KV Power Cable 115 Mils is the largest of its kind and is used in distribution, main feeder and branch circuits for commercial, industrial, and electric utility installations where maximum carrying capacity is needed.  The cable can be installed in aerial applications, direct burial, conduit open tray, and underground duct installations.  When installed in accordance with NEC regulations, the cable is safe for use in wet or dry locations.  For direct burial applications, ensure the cable is installed in a system with a ground conductor that is in close proximity with NEC 250.4(A)(5).  Under normal operating conditions, this cable is able to function at temperatures up to 105°C.  At emergency operating conditions, the cable can tolerate temperatures up to 140°C.  In short circuit situations, the cable has a temperature rating of 250°C.

Product Description:

The conductive component of this cable is a concentric compact stranded class B copper conductor.

Applications:

This cable is used in distribution, main feeder and branch circuits for commercial, industrial, and electric utility installations.

Specifications:

  • In accordance with standards set forth by Underwriters Laboratories, this product meets or exceeds UL standard 1072.  This standard sets the expectations for shielded and unshielded. Specifications require this cable to be able to function at temperatures.
  • This cable is Underwriters Laboratories listed as Type MV-105. MV-105 stands for the voltage (Medium Voltage) and the maximum operating temperature (105°C).
  • This cable meets UL standard 1685.  This standard required the product to pass a flame exposure test in which the total smoke released is to be 95 m2 or less and the peak smoke release rate is to be 0.25 m2/s or less.  The cable char height is to be less than 8 ft, 0 inch (244 cm) when measured from the bottom of the cable tray in accordance with Section 8.
  • The cable passes the IEEE 1202 flame test, a test designed to measure the flame resistance qualities of cable in cable tray.
  • This cable is deemed acceptable by Occupational Safety and Health Administration.

Construction:

-                Conductor

  • The conductive component of this cable is a concentric compact stranded class B copper conductor.  The class B copper in this cable is annealed to make the conductor softer and more malleable.

-                Extruded Strand Shield

  • The extruded thermoset semi-conducting strand shield is a layer over the conductor that controls stress on the conductor.

-                Insulation

  • The cable is insulated with Ethylene Propylene Rubber insulation.

-                Extruded Insulation Shield

  • The extruded insulation shield is a thermoset semi-conducting polymeric layer free stripping from insulation.

-                Metallic Shield

  • The metallic shield is a copper tape that covers the insulation.  The tape is 5 mils annealed copper with an overlap of 25%.

-                Jacket

  • The outer jacket is a black PVC jacket.  The PVC jacket is flame-retardant and moisture and sunlight resistant.
