How to Select the Right Cord for your Project

When there is a do-it-yourself project, you will want to equip yourself with all the best tools in the industry and that includes buying the right cables and cords. Many, however, do not know how to buy the right stuff and most would spend hours browsing through the internet and shops before they find the perfect one.

The Formula
Now to get the formula right, you must know everything about the cord or cable that you are buying. Now take, for example, the SJOOW Portable Cord Yellow Seoprene Cord 600V. I would say that it is a nice utility cord and that it would serve just about any application that need a temporary power supply for 600V. Now there are more than a hundred such cords in the market and it would be next to impossible to select the perfect one unless you know what to look for.

Step One – know your cord
So taking the SEOOW portable cord, let us first see what the cord is useful for. The color yellow is quite attractive, but it is chosen for industrial applications where you would want to alert people to high-risk jobs. So if you want to choose a yellow cord, go ahead, as it would certainly warn those around you that you are doing a high-risk job.

Step two - Getting into the Details
The next thing to look out for is whether the cord can be used indoors or outdoors. This is indicated by the letter “W” which shows that the cord is indeed weather and waterproof. So you can get your gardening jobs done with this high-end cord even if it rains, that is, if you don’t mind working while getting soaked to the bones. The next thing to look out for is the things that the cord is resistant to. These cords are mostly resistant to water, oil, grease, chemicals and acids. The double OO in the cord indicates that both the jacket and the insulation are resistant to oil.

Step three – the super strength materials used
The “E” in the cord stands for Thermoplastic Polymer (TPE) and if you are in Canada then the cord will become “SJTOW TPE” as the “E” gets replaced by “T” followed by the TPE. The materials used are very flexible and sturdy which makes is an extra heavy-duty cord.

So now that you know the basics, your shopping will become easier and hopefully you get what you want.
