General Cable Type SOOW® 2/4 Gauge 600V Non-UL Portable Cord

General Cable Type SOOW® 2/4 Gauge 600V Non-UL Portable Cord

Carol Double Jacket Drill Cord 600 Volt MSHA Approved Remote Control & Drill Cord

Product Description:

SOOW 2/4 is a portable power cord that is most commonly used for wiring for portable appliances, portable tools, and small motors.  The name SOOW is descriptive of the cable’s characteristics.  The “S” stands for “service cord”.  A service cord is characterized by its ability to transmit up to 600 volts of electric current.  The “OO” symbolizes oil resistance in the jacket and insulation.  Oil resistance is an important property to note because many cables are resistant to chemicals and liquids, but are not impervious to oil.  The “W” represents the cable’s water resistance which allows it to function in wet locations.

Aside from its resistance to oil and water, the cable is also resilient enough to function in temperatures as low as -40°C and as high as 90°C.  It is suitable for installation in most geographical regions because of its ability to endure these extreme temperatures.  The cable is even flame resistant and can be used in locations with an increased risk of fire.

The cable is lightweight and can be easily transported from one site to the next.  Even after installation, the cable is tough enough to be salvaged and reused again.  For SOOW 2/4 and other sizes, be sure to check out Nassau National Cable’s extensive selection.

Applications:

The cable is used for industrial and medium-duty mining applications as well as for heavy-duty service as power supply cable, AC systems (grounded and ungrounded), heavy-duty and long service life applications, mobile and portable electrical equipment, and motor and battery leads.  The cable offers exceptional resistance to impact, crushing, and tear, and is therefore a great option for use in high impact applications where the cable will likely be jostled.  The cable is suitable for use in wet or dry locations in underground mines in accordance with Schedule 26 of the US Bureau of Mines.  The cable is resistant to oil, heat, moisture, acids, and most chemicals, and is therefore a suitable cable for use in hazardous locations.  The cable passes MSHA Flame Test and can be installed in locations with an increased risk of fire.  The 3-conductor construction is typically used on AC systems where no grounding is required or on DC systems with one conductor for grounding.  The 4-conductor cable is used on two or three-phase AC systems with one conductor used for grounding.  The 5-conductor cable is commonly used in applications where separating the system neutral from the frame ground is required.

Specifications:

-                In accordance with specifications set forth by American Society for Testing and Materials, a regulations and compliance organization established over 100 years ago, this cable aligns with ASTM standards B3 and B174 for copper conductors.

-                This cable meets ICEA standard S-75-381 for Portable and Power Feeder Cables for Use in Mines and Similar Applications.

-                The cable passes MSHA Flame Test

Construction:

-                Conductors

  • This cable features fully annealed stranded bare copper conductors that align with ASTM standard B3 and B174 for copper conductors.
  • The annealed copper product used in this cable offers superior flexibility compared to standard copper.

-                Insulation

  • The cable is insulated with premium-grade ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM) rubber.
  • The EPDM insulation protects the conductors from being damaged by abrasion or corrosion.
  • The insulation is color-coded so that the conductors can be identified and bears a temperature rating of 90°C.

-                Jacket

  • A double layer of black crosslinked polyethylene or neoprene exterior shell that is resistant to sunlight, high heat, and abrasion jackets the assembly of conductors.
  • For mechanical strength, a polyester braid reinforcement is applied between the two layers to enhance mechanical strength.
  • The jacket is manufactured in the USA and bears a temperature rating of -40°C to 90°C.
