6 Gauge XHHW-2 Copper Wire
6 gauge XHHW-2 copper wire is one of the smaller sizes of XHHW-2 wire. It can be used in a variety of situations as outlined by the National Electrical Code. This wire must meet or exceed a number of standards, including UL Standard 44, ICEA S-95-658 (NEMA WC 70) – Nonshielded 0 – 2 kV Cables, Federal Specification A-A-59544, and ASTM B3/B8.
Type XHHW-2 conductors are primarily used in conduit or other recognized raceways for services, feeders, and branch circuit wiring, as specified in the National Electrical Code. XHHW-2 conductors may be used in wet or dry locations at temperatures not to exceed 90° C. Voltage rating for XHHW-2 conductors is 600 volts.
This wiring can be used in a number of different ways. It’s most often used in industrial lighting and in power supply cables. It’s generally installed in conduits and in raceways and used for services, feeders, and branch circuit wiring. All of the uses for XHHW-2 wiring are listed in the National Electrical Code 1. This specifies that it may be used in wet or dry environments as long as the conductor temperature doesn’t rise above 90 degrees C. Because the insulation on this wire is so durable and resistant to the elements, it can be used in a variety of different areas.
6 gauge XHHW-2 wiring features conductors made from annealed (soft) copper. In order to protect these conductors and allow the wiring to be used in various locations, it’s covered with a durable cross-linked polyethylene (XLP) insulation. This insulation is cross-linked high heat water resistant (XHHW), so it protects the wires from heat, water, and direct sunlight. The jacket that covers this insulation protects in from rough use and cuts. Note that this size is not available in color coded jackets
This wire’s has a size of 6 AWG and a stranding (Al/Stl) of 7. Its complete cable (O.D.) is 267 mils, and the insulation’s thickness is 45 mls. A spool of 1,000 feet weighs 99 pounds.
The allowable ampacity of this wire varies depending on the operating temperature. At 60 degrees C, it’s 55 amps; at 75 degrees C, it’s 65 amps; and at 90 degrees C, it’s 75 amps.

Sunlight Resistant in black only. Not CT rated. Conductor sizes 2 AWG and larger listed and marked sunlight resistant in black only.
Copper Type XHHW-2 conductors are created out of annealed soft copper that can conduct a very high load of electricity. In fact, copper is the most conductive metal outside of the precious metals group. That combined with its abundance and affordability makes it easy to see why half of all mined copper is used in wiring.
Copper XHHW conductors are designed for use in conduits and in other recognized raceways as feeders, services, and branch circuit wiring. This type of wiring can be used in a variety of different environments, including areas where the wiring will be exposed to water or moisture. The maximum voltage for Type XHHW-2 wiring is 600 volts, and it should not be used in an area where the conductor temperature will exceed 90 degrees Celsius. Other than that, this is a fairly flexible wire that has a variety of uses.
