    XHHW-2 Copper Wire

    Product Description:

    XHHW, the acronym in the product’s name, stand for Cross-linked (insulation) High Heat resistant, Water resistant.  XHHW-2 Copper Wire consists of a single soft annealed copper conductor that is jacketed by a cross-linked polyethylene insulation.  The cross-linked insulation serves as a protective armor to shield the conductors from abrasion as well as from corrosive elements such as heat, dryness, and moisture.  The insulation also creates a smooth exterior texture so that when it comes time to install the cables, there is less friction, making the pulling process much easier.


    This cable is most commonly used in conduit or raceways for branch circuit wiring, services, and feeders.  Intermediate metal conduit, rigid metal conduit, flexible metal conduit, and polyvinyl chloride conduit (PVC) are the most common conduit types that are used with this cable.  The conductors can be used in wet and dry locations and can tolerate temperatures up to 90°C. 


    • In accordance with specifications set forth by Underwriters Laboratories (UL), a compliance and regulations organization established over 100 years ago, this product meets with UL Standard 44.  This standard sets specifications for thermoset insulated conductors, ensuring they are able to tolerate high heat and carry an ampacity of 600 volts. 
    • This product is also in alignment with specifications established by the American Society for Testing and Materials.  The cable meets ASTM Standard B3, which require the cable’s copper electrical components to meet specific ratings for tensile strength and resistivity.
    • XHHW-2 Copper Wire meets with Federal Specification A-A-59544, deeming it suitable for use in industrial and commercial buildings.


    • Conductors

    -            The conductors in this cable are made of soft annealed copper.  Copper offers many favorable characteristics; it is an extremely powerful electrical conductor and it has a proven ability to retain its stability over long periods of time.

    • Insulation

    -            The cross-linked polyethylene insulation that encases the copper conductor is made using a process called thermosetting.  Plastic and rubber-like materials are heated to extremely high temperatures and then when they are cooled, they create a flexible yet tough material that protects the conductors from high heat, dryness, moisture, corrosive chemicals, and abrasion.

    • Stranding

    -            This cable is available in solid copper wire or in a concentrically stranded design.  The advantage of the concentrically stranded cable is that it is more flexible which is typically desired for a large job.  Solid copper is more cost efficient and resists corrosion longer due to less surface area exposed.
