Wire accessories are suitable for use in directing wire and carrying electric current to a specific destination. Cord sets, adapters and garden hose are popular wire accessories in both domestic and commercial applications. They are well known for the transmission, conversion of electric current. They also prevent hazardous incidents such as electric shock and electric fire from occurring. GFCI stands for Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter which means a device that shuts off electric current once it detects that the electric current is flowing in an unintended path including a person or even water. While D.I.Y stands for Do It Yourself whereby it offers personal protection in situations whereby ground faults are involved in electrical equipment. It also shuts of flow of current in occurrence of faulty connections and worn out insulations in cables.

Its amazing features that make it perform its functions very well, is that it can be attached to any cord set or power tool and a special sealant is included to its construction to create rainproof connection. As hinted earlier water is quite hazardous when in contact with electric current to prevent this that is why the rainproof sealant is added to prevent rain water from gaining access in to the cable especially in outdoor applications whereby this situation is quite common.

Like the previous accessory we discussed this one is also used in protection from ground faults in electrical equipment. When it comes to the construction and design it is relatively different from the previous cable. It has a compact unit with double outlets which enable both indoor and outdoor use. It also has a Hi-impact plastic case with a spring hinged cover which makes the appliance robust and less prone to damage. These appliances also have both reset and manual test buttons. The test button which is next to the reset button is used to show if the device is working properly. SJTW wire type is used for this appliance.

This wire accessory is responsible for directing wire and carrying electric current to specific destinations. It’s designed to be hot water safe whereby it cannot be transmission of electric current cannot be affected by hot water since it is mainly used in applications where hot water is involved. Flexibility is also another feature this appliance withholds which makes it more reliable in vigorous applications. Machined brass couplings are also present in the appliance for efficient transmission of current and use in heavy duty applications.

Harbor Cable
Harbour cables can be used in a wide range of applications including Ethernet systems, transmission of electric current in most aerospace and commercial applications. This cable is ideal for use in a wide range of high speed Ethernet applications. Some of the amazing advantages of this cable are that it is very easy to install and has a top notch electrical performance. The cable is also very durable, light weight and small in size. When it comes to its construction fluropolymer insulation is used while aluminum is used as an inner shield. FEP is used for the jacket but laser mark able ETFE and PFA are also available upon request. It’s main application areas include in-flight entertainment systems, cabin management systems and ground vehicle trunk and bus.

The construct is not any different from the previous cable; its unique attribute comes in its flexibility. Its immensely flexible hence it is ideal for routing in tight spaces.

It has four conductors’ quadrax design and a fluropolymer for its insulation. The conductors are silver plated copper alloys with tin or silver plated copper braids. It has a fluropolymer tape binder and a TPC inner braid. FEP jacket is also installed when it comes to the cables’ construction. This cable can perform very well in extremely hot temperatures since its rated 150 degrees Celsius up to 200 degrees Celsius. This cable can be easily terminated in case something goes wrong since the material used for the insulation is non-shrinkable.

Stranded silver plated copper conductor which enhances flexibility of the cable. Extruded PTFE is used as the cables insulator. A silver plated copper braid with 85% coverage is added to its construction. PTFE jacket is also used to protect the inner components of the cable from damage that may be caused by external forces.

Made of stranded silver or nickel plated conductor and an additional extruded PTFE for insulation.

This cable is rated at 600 volts but when it comes to construction wise it is not any different from the previous cables.

Specialty Tubing
They are mainly used oil and natural gas wells for chemical injection applications however this tubing’s can be further used for control line tubing applications. Most of these tubing’s are required to be resistant to corrosive forces, abrasion and most importantly flame resistant to prevent cases of fire since most of its applications involve highly flammable substances. There are various types of specialty tubing in the market, they include;

As hinted earlier it’s used for chemical injection applications in oil and natural gas wells. It’s a duplex stainless steel, when appropriately heat treated; the microstructure consists of a nearly equal mixture of the austenitic and ferrite phases. This two-phase microstructure produces a fine grain size which increases the yield strength. In the final heat treated condition, alloy 2205 can achieve a yield strength nearly twice that of austenitic alloys such as 316L, 825 and 625 which must be cold worked in order to achieve comparable yield strengths. Duplex stainless steels are often classified as lean, conventional, super or hyper based upon their pitting resistance equivalence (PRE or PREN). Alloy 2205 is often chosen for use in oil and gas production environments because of its higher strength and resistance to pitting, crevice and stress corrosion cracking in chloride containing environments.

It is commonly referred to as TEC and is typically used in oil, natural gas and geothermal wells to provide power and communication to down hole gauges. It has a core containing insulated electrical conductors or optical fibers. It is usually supplied as 5000ft to 35000ft. Alloy 316L is chromium - nickel austenitic stainless steel added with molybdenum and reduced carbon content. The addition of molybdenum ensures maximum resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion in environments containing halides including chlorides when compared to so-called conventional 18 chromium 8 nickel austenitic stainless steels such as 304L. The reduced carbon content reduces harmful chromium carbide precipitation during welding hence improves resistance to inter-granular corrosion.

For chemical injection purposes in both heat treated and cold conditions. It is commonly referred to as capillary tubing and is free hanging inside the product casing. Alloy 625 is an austenitic nickel / chromium / molybdenum / niobium alloy. The high alloy content ensures that alloy 625 is able to withstand severe aqueous corrosion environments. High molybdenum content (8.0 to 10.0%) makes the alloy highly resistant to chloride pitting and crevice corrosion. High nickel content (58.0% min.) enables relative freedom from chloride ion induced stress-corrosion cracking. Alloy 625 has depicted superb corrosion resistance in oil and gas production environments containing hydrogen sulfide, carbon dioxide and chlorides.

Umbilicals
These types of cables are used for installation indoor, outdoor and above ground for power, control and lighting systems both in EX- and safe areas. Can be used for both instrumentation and control systems.

Examples of umbilicals

Draka Cable TFSI(c) 250V XLPE/LSTPE/CWS/PO Flame Retardant Cable

Is made of annealed stranded, circular copper conductor and a cross linked polyethylene insulator on top of the conductor. The color coded cores are twisted together and wrapped with a polyester tape. It has an inner covering made of a thermoplastic compound which is designed to be flame retardant and halogen free. A concentric copper conductor is put in place as the cables armor and an additional outer sheath which is also made from a thermoplastic compound to its ability to resist flames. It has marking texts on the outer sheath to give information on the manufacturer and its specifications. Its operating temperature is at 90 degrees Celsius and its power rating is at 250 volts.

This type of cable is designed for harsh environmental conditions and can work very well in water deep as 1000 meters in both static and dynamic applications. They comprise of the following typical functions;

  • High pressure hydraulic control hoses
  • Electric power and control cables

For high pressure hydraulic control hoses, they are made of a nylon extruded liner, reinforced with an extruded polyurethane layer while electric power and control cables are insulated and jacketed with SEVEREX high performance compounds. The outer jacket is designed to repel abrasive forces and crushing.
