Type P Cable Rig and Marine Cable

Doing a project offshore? Well, I hope you find this post helpful to you because am going to share with you about Type P Cable Rig and Marine Cable which are tailored to serve in onshore and offshore power applications. It is true that all cables have the ability to transmit power but the question is, where specifically are we supposed to install these cables? Power cables are designed and manufactured with different materials to serve at different points of power distribution; some are made simple to carry low voltage while some are made of composite materials to supply high voltages under harsh environments.

Type P rig and marine cable are generally made for installation applications in demanding environmental conditions, which is normally experienced in onshore and offshore drilling rigs. These demanding environmental conditions may include; a severe cold, mud, high heat, salt corrosion, constant vibrational waves as well as mechanical stress. For these reasons, they are made of protective materials approved by the Underwriters Laboratory specification to enhance their performance. Cables operating in harsh environment such as Type P cable and Marine cable are engineered to endure a demanding environment; when used in wiring installations for signals, power, and control or instrumentation applications. The following are the properties that facilitate the performance of Type P and marine cable:

Resistant to drilling mud
Mud is possible to be released in a drilling environment and this could hammer damage on your electrical system around the area. As far as safety of your wiring channel is concerned, cables installed in this area should have adaptive materials to protect them from damages caused by mud to avoid short circuiting. Mud Cables include;

1.Eutex BU (I) S13 Instrumentation Cable
It is made of an annealed stranded copper wire covered with a mica or glass taping layer, which is protective against fire and then insulated with HF EPR in accordance to IEC 60092-351 and is twisted to form a pair. An aluminum or copper backing polyester tape is used for individual screening with a tinned copper draining wire. The twisted pairs are each enveloped with a polyester tape to create a boundary limiting contact within them thus improving their electrical conductivity. Eutex S13 cable is then sheathed with SHF MUD or SHF2 based on IEC 60092-359, on the outer surface to withstand mud.

2.Eutex BU P17 Unarmored Power & Control cable
This cable is almost similar to the one mentioned above; both BU P17 and BU (I) cables are all made of the same conductor that is annealed copper wires which are tinned, HF EPR insulation as well as the mud protective sheath of either SHF2 or SHF MUD. You will agree with me that these cables are designed in a similar manner. However, they are intended for different purposes i.e. BU P17 is intended to work as a power and control cable while BU (I) cable serves as an instrumentation cable.

Flame Retardant
Flames and heat is not a strange thing especially in a drilling environment where natural gas and oil is excavated. Fire indeed is a bad master because it is always going to burn anything that gets into its way and to avoid this, you need a flame retardant cable for installation in your wiring system. A flame retardant cable does not succumb to burning easily, why? Simply because such cables are made of protective insulation and jacketing materials that do not burn easily. They are insulated with a cross linked polyethylene (XLP) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) that are flame retardant as per UL standards.

You need cables made of XLP and PVC in your drilling wire lines, to ensure that your supply system does not worn out with time due to exposure to flames and heat. Since it will do you a great effect when you experience unnecessary power failures in your machineries. Go for cables like;

1.Prysmian&Draka BFCU Instrumentation cable
This cable comes as a stranded concentrically annealed copper conductor (STCC) in accordance to IEC 60228 Class B. Copper conductors are insulated with a mica tape and EP rubber and twisted into pairs or triples depending on the number of conductors it has. They are then screened with a polyester copper backed tape by a tinned copper draining wire. The pairs/ triples of conductors are shielded individually and laid up in circular layers wrapped with PETP tape. It has an inner covering which is made of a thermoplastic material that is flame retardant as well as halogen-free; taped with PET tape and rubberized polyamide tape.

Prysmian and Draka BFCU cable is armored with a galvanized braided steel wire to prevent rusting and corrosion from taking place and taped with both PET & polyamide tape. It is sheathed with a thermoset compound SHF2 that is flame retardant, mud resistant and halogen-free meeting the approvals of IEC 60092-360. This cable will support your wiring system carrying up to 300 volts at an operating temperature of 90 degrees Celsius. Consider it a cable of choice in your installation applications of instrumentation, alarm system, communication and control connection channel.

2.Prysmian&Draka BFOU-HCF Cable
This cable is exactly the same as the one discussed above, since they share the same conductor, insulation, and sheathing material. However, there is a slight difference with Prysmian and Draka BFOU-HCF cable in that it has the HCF (Hydrocarbon Fire) which is not present in Prysmian and Draka BFCU even though they are both used as instrumentation cables. It is also lapped with a glass fiber taping which is not the case in Prysmian and Draka BFCU cable that has mica taping. It suitable for installation applications in critical and emergency systems where a hydrocarbon (HCF), fire resistance is required.

Oil Resistance
In an offshore oil drilling rigs environment, oil spillage on your wiring system is an expected occurrence that is rare to avoid. It is therefore recommended that you install cables that can perform even when exposed to oil spills without surrendering to damages. You need cables that are oil resistant to ensure that your drilling equipment is not subjected to suffer shut down due to cable damages which arise because of exposure to oil. All this solely depends on the type of conductor and the insulation and jacketing materials used in designing the cables and thus should be considered.

Oil resistant cables are normally in armored or unarmored and sheathed or unsheathed forms. Armored cables may be made of approved materials like tinned copper, interlocked aluminum strip or the optional bronze. Examples of such cables include:

1.Prysmian&Draka BFOV(I) Oil Resistant Cable
It is made of annealed concentrically stranded two or more copper conductors (STCC) as per IEC 6028 Class B insulated with an Ethylene Propylene Rubber (EPR) in accordance to IEC 60092-360. These conductors are twisted into pairs or triples depending on the printed numbers and are individually shielded in circular layers wrapped in PETP tape. They are insulated with a thermoplastic compound that is flame retardant and sheathed with SHFR, which is oil resistant and halogen-free. This cable is armored with a braided tinned annealed copper wire for protection against crushing and any other external pressure.

Prysmian and Draka BFOV cable is the right cable for your oil drilling wire systems because it can as well serve you with up to 300 power Voltages, at an operating temperature range of 90 degrees Celsius. It is installed and used as an instrumentation cable.

2.Prysmian&Draka BFOV 0,6/1 Turbine Oil Resistant
This cable is no doubt similar to the Prysmian and Draka BFOV cable discussed above: The only difference is in their functionality whereby BFOV 0,6/1 cable is intended to serve as a power cable whereas BFOV is used as an instrumentation cable. Do you need a high voltage transmitting oil resistant cable? Go for Prysmian and Draka BFOV 0,6/1 cable that carries up to 1.2KV.

When looking for an outstanding cable in the presence of harsh marine environmental condition, whether offshore and onshore you should consider durability of the cable as well. Control Cables
As the name infers, a Control cable is a cable that sends signals used in controlling the performance of an equipment thus regulating its automation process. Well, electrical cables are designed differently and Type LSMSC cable comes as a stranded bare copper conductor with an extruded silicone rubber insulation jacketed with a cross linked polyolefin jacket. It is designed with a wide range of voltage rating of up to 1000V at an operating temperature of up to 180 degrees and is preferably installed in offshore drilling rigs. Shipboard Cable
Any cable designed and manufactured for use a board the ship or marine vessel is referred to as a Shipboard cable. Such a cable is flame retardant and low smoke & halogen free, which basically relies on the insulation and jacketing material used in its construction. It is meant for installation applications in the ships as well as offshore platforms for power transmission to electric panels, in control circuits, lighting, transmitting critical instrumentation signal, etc. The voltage rating varies i.e. for power and control shipboard cables is 1.0KV whereas, 250V for instrumentation shipboard cables.
