Metal Clad MC and Interlocked Armor and CCW MC-HL

Metal Clad (MC) refers to a metallic coat that offers protection against chemical and mechanical damage. Whereby, chemical damage may be as a result of corrosive chemicals getting into contact with live wires causing a reaction that in turn corrodes the power wires. Mechanical damage is mainly caused by external force e.g. crashing that may occur during shipment and installation of the cable.

It is true that some power cables are made of metallic cladding material to boost their performance, so what’s different about the performance of these Metal Clad cables? MC cable has an insulated grounding wire that when terminated on both ends, can make a reliable return route for fault current to flow thus facilitating overcurrent device to do its defensive role.

Some power cables achieve their protective mechanism due to the presence of an Interlocked Armor. Interlocking armor is almost the same as the MC. However, an armored cable has its metallic sheath in contact with the grounding wire that can as well serve as an equipment grounding wire. The interlocking armor is often made of aluminum strip or copper. Cables instilled with an interlocking armor relieves the users from extra costs incurred if the cable was to be deployed in conduit systems. This is because you don’t need to spend much on buying other interlocking strips.

CCW MC-HL refers to Continuously Corrugated Welded cable to play the same role of both MC and interlocked armor. These cables are designed and manufactured to withstand harsh environmental conditions. For contractors looking for durable cables, go for types MC, Interlocked Armored and CCW cables because a part from their protective mechanisms they are as well economic alternative. Continuously Corrugated Welded Cable (CCW)
There are many type CCW cables which are designed to operate under harsh environmental conditions. CCW cable is made of a Class B, bare concentrically annealed copper wire per ASTM. Annealed soft copper wire make the cable more flexible thus less effort is required to pull and bend the cable during installation. The copper wire is then insulated with a cross linked polyethylene (XLPE) insulation that is flexible and protective against extreme pressure, weather and moisture resistant. Insulated copper wires are cabled together with polyvinyl chloride (PVC) jacketing which is non-hygroscopic and black in color. PVC is sunlight, moisture and flame retardant.

Why do we need CCW cable? The cabled assembly of insulated copper wires is armored with continuously corrugated and welded aluminum alloyed strip like CCW 600V Composite Power and Control cable, which is as per the UL 1569. Aluminum strip is the overall outside coating of CCW cable which is strong enough and protect the inner copper wires from direct mechanical and chemical damage. We need CCW cable because of its resilient protective strength as well as its economic alternative option. It is economic effective as you don’t need to order for other traditional cladding options.

Continuously Welded Armor C-L-X MC-HL Cable
Continuously Welded Armor Cable is made of a soft annealed bare copper conductor per ASTM, and class B stranding as per ASTM B-8. Just like the 600V UL Type MC Cable, the soft copper conductor is insulated with cross linked XLP insulation to create a convenient boundary between the live wire and the neutral path, thus preventing power blows. Power blow is very dangerous and can lead to fatal fire outbreaks which should be avoided at all cost. For this reason, cable insulation is very important as it norms even the life of the users apart from the cable life.

Insulated soft copper conductors is then armored with a continuously welded and corrugated sheath of aluminum, and PVC jacketed outer coat to offer protection against mechanical and chemical damage. if you are looking for a cable that offers reliable protection against harsh environs, I would recommend that you go for the Continuously Welded Armor C-L-X MC-HL Cable. It also has a voltage rating of 300V, 600V, 2.4KV or 15KV.

Copper Type MC Cable
When we mention type MC we refer to Cables with Metal Cladding, so Copper Metallic Cladded Cable is a power cable is type of cladded cable that contains either one or more copper grounding conductors.

MC Cable like the Metal Clad Cable is consisted of a concentrically stranded copper wires insulated with a black PVC with a grounding wire that can either be insulated and green in color or left bare. The Insulated copper wires and the grounding wire are all encased with an aluminum intermeshed jacketing. Copper conductor cables are always known to be heavy but this is minimized by the intermeshed aluminum jacketing strip which makes the MC Cable lightweight,easy to pull and carry around. With this, the electricians use less effort during installation when pulling and bending the cable.

HVTECK Armored Control and Power Cable
HVTECK cable is made of a Class B bare copper conductor compacted at 6 AWG thru 1000 kcmil. The copper conductor is insulated with a TRXLPE (Tree-retardant Cross Linked Polyethylene) insulation. Insulation of HVTECK is shielded with a semi conducting thermoset layer that is applied in triple extrusion with a concentric copper wire that acts as a grounding wire or a draining wire. Insulated copper conductor has an inner jacketing layer made of PVC, which is lead free, moisture retardant, flame retardant and offer resistance to strong and harmful UV rays.

Inner jacketing layer is armored with the strong aluminum interlocking strip that encases all the conductors and the grounding wire together. HVTECK has an outer overall jacketing made of PVC coating the armored aluminum strip. You will agree with me that if you want a durable cable that can withstand wear and tear, a cable that do not easily succumb to pinching or any other damage go for HVTECK Armored Cable because the additional armor and the overall outer PVC jacketing layer protects the cable from harsh environmental conditions. This cable is also cost effective especially when deployed in conduit system installation.

Industrial Armored Cable
Industrial Armored Cable comes as a bare compacted Class B stranded copper conductor compressed at 6AWG thru 1000kcml which is insulated with (EPR) Ethylene Propylene Rubber which is colored for easy identification with the black grounding or conducting wire. The grounding wire of an Industrial Armored Cable is made of a Class B bare annealed copper stranded wire per ASTM B8. Both the copper conductor and the grounding wire are armored directly with AIA (Aluminum Interlocking Armor), which is encased with an overall PVC jacketing coat.

Do I really need an Industrial Armored Cable? Yes, you need it because the insulation and jacketing of this cable is designed to conquer harsh climatic conditions. AIA and the PVC offer protection against flame, pressure and even the harmful sunlight rays. Industrial Armored cable is a perfect solution for your power line especially when used in harsh environment. It also has a voltage rating of up to 600V showing that it can help you supplying high voltage of power, can as well be used for grounding applications.

An Interlocked Armor Cable
An interlocked armored cable simply means that a power supplying cable has its overall outer layer tightening the inner wires, and compacting them all together. But now when we mention an Interlocked Armor Cable we refer to a power supplying cable made of a soft annealed Class B bare copper conductor compressed as per ASTM standards of B3 and B8, just like the MV-90 Cable Type MC.

This cable is commonly preferred in electric installation because it is more flexible than the ordinary copper wire. The soft copper conductors are reinforced with an extruding semi-conducting which is a thermosetting polymeric layer, bonding to the insulation. Copper conductors are insulated with a Cross Linked Polyethylene (XLP) that is directly covered with a shielding layer. A shielding layer is an extruded semi conducting layer that is responsible for preventing unnecessary interference from the electric charge to any device nearby as well as preventing electric shocks. The assembly of the shielding layer and the copper conductors is compacted together with the copper grounding conductor for easy conductivity, and coated with a binding tape and interlocked with the aluminum strip.

An interlocked armored cable is widely applied in different areas since they can also be strung across the aerials and be buried as well. This cable is also cost effective especially when used for installations in the cable trays or conduit systems.

TECK90 Armored Control and Power Cable
TECK90 armored control and power cable is designed and manufactured to perform under harsh environmental conditions. Well, it comes with its conductor made of a bare stranded Class B soft copper conductor that is compressed as per the ASTM standards. Soft copper conductor makes TECK90 cable to bend easily during installation thus becomes more flexible that the standard copper cable. Flexibility of the cable is very important since it do not exhaust electricians when installing the cable as they will use less effort in pulling and hanging the cable.

Copper conductor is insulated with a cross linked polyethylene (XLPE) to create a convenient boundary between the live wire and the neutral path. This is also important for the cable life because it protects the cable from experiencing charge leakages which would in turn cause shocks to the users, blow other devices or lead to rampant power faults. A bare copper grounding wire is also bonded to the copper conductors and are both covered with an inner jacketing PVC. The jacketing PVC is again interlocked with the strong aluminum interlocking strip for protection, with an outer PVC jacketing encasing the TECK90 cable. ACWU90 XLPE Armored Low Voltage Power Cable
Armored XLPE Low Voltage power cable comes in three common types i.e. ACWU90 1C, ACWU90 3C and ACWU90 4C. They are very similar however the only difference is in their construction of conductor based on the thickness of the copper conductors.ACWU90 1C is made of a stranded Class B, soft copper conductor compressed at 4/0 AWG as per the ASTM series.

1.ACWU90 3C is similarly made of a bare soft copper wire, Class B compresse4d at 6AWG to 2AWG per ASTM standards.

2.ACWU90 4C is also made of the same conductor but compressed at 2AWG per ASTM standards.

The soft copper conductor is insulated with a cross linked polyethylene insulation for protection. Grounding copper conductor is bonded with the insulated soft copper conductor to improve conductivity of the ACWU90 cable. Copper conductor and the grounding wire are encased together with an aluminum interlocked armor and coated with a layer of lead free PVC which is black in color for easy identification.

Why go for type MC, armored and CCW-HL Cable?
You will agree with me that power that offer self-support especially when installed vertically is the cable that you need for your power line. This is because you don’t need to spend much time cross-checking in between the cable trays to confirm the connection system. This cables are such easy to install.

Who doesn’t need a cost effective cable? Because of the interlocked Armored Aluminum strip CCW and type MC cables are cost effective alternative to installation in conduit systems, cable trays etc. since you don’t need to incur cost in buying other traditional interlocking metal strips.

These cables are lightweight and flexible due to the interlocked aluminum strip. Lightweight cables are easy to handle and require less effort to carry during installation and also less effort to wound into drums for shipment because of their flexibility.

Insulation of these cables are much superior because they are made of lead free and flame retardant Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) and the temperature retardant Cross Linked Polyethylene insulation material.

Applications
Cables with such features are widely used in outdoor and indoor installations. They can as well be buried in conduit pipes, cable trays, or even used in aerials. Can also be used in wet and dry environmental conditions.

They are tested and approved to meet the standards of Underwriters Laboratory (UL) specifications which include;

  • Flame Test compliances e.g. IEEE 383
  • Industrial Compliances e.g. ICEA S-96-659/NEMA WC71, UL Type MC, UL File
