Low Voltage Power Cable

Every building in the contemporary society needs a well-configured power supply system. It’s almost as if electricity has become a basic need. In most parts of the world today, people cannot imagine life without electricity, more so in the developed countries. A low voltage cable is a power systems component that distributes power from the consumer unit to other parts of any building. Copper and has been used as a low voltage for long, for all the good reasons; It is reliable, efficient and of high flexural rigidity to withstand the tough construction environment. A low voltage power cable can also be made of aluminum.

A low voltage cable refers to a mains transmission wire that carries electric current of low voltage. Electric power from powerhouse is often high voltage and very dangerous. It take special cables to transmit it to the national grids and step down transformers which reduces the voltage to manageable amounts.

The lower voltages can safely be connected to residential houses for use with electrical appliances using the low voltage power cable. However, the low voltage cable does not necessarily mean low risk cable, it only means that the current flowing in this cable is safer for consumption than raw power from the powerhouse. Therefore this cable is also dangerous and safety measures should be observed when handling it to avoid shock.

Construction

This cable is made with solid, rigid or stranded aluminum and copper electrodes. The insulation on this cable is made of polyvinyl chloride (PVC), XLP, LSF/LSOH.

Features of the Low voltage cable

low voltage cable has an insulation coating. The fact that a low voltage power cable carry electric current at lower voltage than the high voltage power cable, does not mean that it is not harmful. For this reason it is coated with a plastic jacket made of polyethylene. This coating protect the cable from strong sunlight rays which may destroy electrode components. The insulation also keeps the cable from corrosive chemicals which would otherwise damage it and adversely affect its conductivity. The coating sheath is strong enough to limit cuttings and abrasive action against this cable.

It is made of a low smoke, fire retardant material which slows down the rate of combustion in case of sudden fire outbreak. Generally, it’s highly flexible for easy handling. The flexibility makes it easy for constructors to wound it in drums for shipping and also use less effort during installation.

It works safely as long as the temperatures don’t exceed 60 degrees.

Applications of Low voltage cable

This is the typical Low voltage landscape lighting cable rated at 150 volt and is often used in security lighting. The low voltage cable is designed for use in either wet or dry environmental conditions, used in duct system, direct burial and in our congested urban network.
