Description:

 Type OFNR cable stands for Optical Fiber Nonconductive Riser.  The cable is composed of glass optical fibers and a dry water block at the cable’s core to protect the fibers.  The cable does not contain any electrically conductive elements.  The interior fibers are surrounded by aramid yarn and then jacketed in a flame-retardant polyvinyl chloride insulation.  The cable is crush-resistant up to 850 lbs and has a maximum vertical rise of 1,640 feet (500 m).  The flame propagation characteristics of this cable are in compliance with the National Electric Code.

Applications:

 This cable is designed to transmit voice or communication data within a building or between multiple buildings.  It is intended for use as a fiber backbone in vertical runs between floors.  For outdoor use, install the cable in ducts or underground conduit.  The cable can operate in temperatures as low as -40°C and temperatures up to 70°C.  

Specifications:

  • The cable meets standards set forth by Underwriters Laboratories for Optical Fiber Nonconductive Riser (OFNR). 
  • This cable passes the CSA FT-4 70,000 BTU flame test.
  • This cable meets or exceeds standards ICEA S-104-696 set forth by Insulated Cable Engineers Association, deeming the cable acceptable for outdoor use.

Construction:

  • Fibers

-           This cable contains 2-144 900µm tight buffer fibers.  Fibers are color coded per TIA/EIA 598B

  • Jacket
-           The cable is jacketed in a flame-retardant polyvinyl chloride (PVC) with sequential footage markings.  Aside from protecting the cable against flame damage, the outer jacket also serves to protect the cable against corrosion due to sunlight, excessive moisture and gasses.  The orange jacket signifies multimode fibers while the yellow jacket indicates singlemode fibers.
