Electrical distribution cables have different insulation materials signifying areas they are intended to serve in. As for this preassembled service wire, it is insulated with XHHW-2 compound. X stands for cross linked, HH for High Heat resistant and W for Water resistant; the negative two (-2) indicates a temperature operational rating at 90 degrees Celsius. XHH-2 insulation material is more modern than the traditional XHHW which could only support 600 power volt transmission at a temperature not exceeding 75 degrees Celsius.

Preassembled Aerial Service wire comes as a three or four stranded annealed bare copper conductors, in which the three are each insulated with XHHW-2 and one conductor which is the neutral wire is left bare but bonded to three conductors with a binding strip. The binding strip is made of a flat bare copper material and it firmly holds the three live conductors and one neutral wire together. A cable with three live conductors and one neutral wire is also known as three phase cable.
